IB Matters/Service As Action
Piedmont IB Website is bit.ly/ibpiedmont
Check out Piedmont's IB monthly newsletter here.
Welcome back! We are so excited to see our returning and new families to Piedmont. This year is going to be fantastic! I will send monthly updates like this one through the PTSA newsletter and the IB Matters monthly update will be posted on our Piedmont IB Website. You can find our IB Website at www.bit.ly/ibpiedmont. This website houses a lot of information that will be useful to you and it is a place where you can see samples of the wonderful things our students and teachers are doing here at school. (Please note I am in the process this week of updating the site)
Our sixth and seventh graders will be working on satisfying their Service As Action Requirements (20 hours for sixth graders and 25 hours for seventh). This year we incorporate service learning opportunities in the classrooms, during SEL, and during sixth block to provide additional resources for our students to satisfy these requirements. The digital form to record the hours can be found on the IB Website under the Service as Action Tab. To access this document your child must be in a CMS Google account. Remember it is your CHILD’S responsibility to complete the form. It is the student’s reflection of the action he/she completed. If you have any questions regarding service as action contact Mr. David Milligan (seventh grade) or Mrs. Maranda Thornburg (sixth grade). The summer form will close on Monday September 6th. The Quarter 1 Form will open on Tuesday September 7th. Mr. Milligan and Mrs. Thornburg will be visiting homeroom classes to speak to students about this process in the first few weeks of school. The completed service hours are due Sunday 5/1/2022 The quarter 4 reflection log will no longer be available after this date.
The eighth graders will be required to complete an MYP Community Project. I will be visiting the eighth grade Individuals and Societies classes to discuss the details of this requirement during the first few weeks of school. Students will be completing a form stating their Community Project topic and if they are working alone, with a partner or in a group of three. Three is the maximum number for a group. Students will be assigned to a Piedmont staff member to supervise and assess the Community Project. The 2021-22 digital process journal is not yet available and students will be receiving that access with detailed instructions when we discuss the process in class. We are not sure if the final Showcase to present the projects will be virtual or in house this year. That is yet to be determined.
Thanks again for your continued support in making Piedmont Middle IB extraordinary.
Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I am looking forward to working with you this year.
